It is worked in a trilliant cut and is untreated — colour and clarity are as they were laid down in the rough material. At 0.51 ct it is among the larger stones this material yields at all.

The trilliant cut picks up the triangular basic shape of the rough crystal and shows a lot of surface at little loss of weight. That is exactly why the decision falls this way on a piece of this size: with hauyne, every hundredth of a carat that does not end up in the grinding slurry is a real gain.

About hauyne

Hauyne belongs to the sodalite group and carries the name of the French mineralogist René Just Haüy. In cuttable quality it comes almost exclusively from the volcanic region of the Eifel, where it occurs as tiny crystals in the ejecta around Lake Laach. Cut stones above one carat count as an exception among collectors. We have described this in detail in our guide: Hauyne, the rarest blue gemstone of the Eifel.

Hauyne is sought after above all for its colour: a deep cornflower to neon blue that hardly any other mineral reaches at this intensity. With a Mohs hardness of about 5.5 to 6 it is soft and readily cleavable. That makes it demanding to cut and recommends it for the collection, for pendants or earrings rather than for a ring worn every day.

Specifications

Stone type: hauyne

Weight: 0.51 ct

Origin: Eifel, Germany

Cut shape: trilliant

Treatment: none, untreated

Cutting: our own workshop

Location: Austria

Availability: unique piece, one only

Further single pieces from the same material can be found under Hauyne, rare species beyond it under More gemstones.
