This hauyne weighs 0.16 ct and comes from the Eifel in Germany. It is worked in a trilliant cut and is untreated — colour and clarity are as they were laid down in the rough material. Like every stone from our workshop it is a unique piece, available only once.
The trilliant cut picks up the triangular basic shape of many rough crystals. It shows a lot of surface at comparatively little loss of weight — a decisive argument with a material that rarely yields larger pieces.
About hauyne
Hauyne belongs to the sodalite group and carries the name of the French mineralogist René Just Haüy. In cuttable quality it comes almost exclusively from the volcanic region of the Eifel, where it occurs as tiny crystals in the ejecta around Lake Laach. We have described this in detail in our guide: Hauyne, the rarest blue gemstone of the Eifel.
Hauyne is sought after above all for its colour: a deep cornflower to neon blue that hardly any other mineral reaches at this intensity. With a Mohs hardness of about 5.5 to 6 it is soft and readily cleavable. That makes it demanding to cut and recommends it for the collection, for pendants or earrings rather than for a ring worn every day.
