This hauyne weighs 0.26 ct and comes from the Eifel in Germany. It is worked in a fancy cut and is untreated — very clear for a faceted hauyne and therefore a particularly rare unique piece, available only once.
A fancy cut follows no standard pattern; it is designed for the individual crystal. Every facet sits where this piece of rough demands it — the design follows inclusions, colour distribution and shape, not the other way round.
About hauyne
Hauyne belongs to the sodalite group and carries the name of the French mineralogist René Just Haüy. In cuttable quality it comes almost exclusively from the volcanic region of the Eifel, where it occurs as tiny crystals in the ejecta around Lake Laach. We have described this in detail in our guide: Hauyne, the rarest blue gemstone of the Eifel.
Hauyne is sought after above all for its colour: a deep cornflower to neon blue that hardly any other mineral reaches at this intensity. With a Mohs hardness of about 5.5 to 6 it is soft and readily cleavable. That makes it demanding to cut and recommends it for the collection, for pendants or earrings rather than for a ring worn every day.
