This indicolite weighs 0.74 ct and comes from Brazil. It is worked in a rectangular cut and is untreated — colour and clarity are as they were laid down in the rough material. Like every stone from our workshop it is a unique piece, available only once.

The rectangular cut with its broad, calm step facets shows the colour as a surface instead of dissolving it into sparkle. With tourmaline the orientation comes on top of that: the material is strongly pleochroic and appears distinctly darker along the length of the crystal. How the stone is oriented decides its blue — and that decision is made before the first cut.

About indicolite

Indicolite is the blue variety of tourmaline, coloured by iron. Among the tourmalines, blue is the rarest of the major colour directions — green and pink occur many times more often. We have gathered more on the varieties in our guide: Tourmaline guide: lagoon, rubellite and more at a glance.

A large share of the blue tourmaline in the trade is heated to lighten and clear the colour. This stone is untreated; its blue grew that way. With a Mohs hardness of 7 to 7.5 and no appreciable cleavage, tourmaline is robust enough for jewellery worn every day.
