Lagoon Tourmaline 2.33 ct – Cushion Cut, Brazil

This lagoon tourmaline weighs 2.33 ct and comes from Brazil. It is worked in a cushion cut and is untreated — colour and clarity are as they were laid down in the rough material. Like every stone from our workshop it is a unique piece, available only once.

The cushion cut, with its rounded corners and mixed faceting, draws a great deal of life out of strongly coloured material: the crown gathers the light, the pavilion gives it back as sparkle without washing out the colour.

About lagoon tourmaline

Lagoon is the trade name for tourmaline in a turquoise blue-green — the tone otherwise known from shallow water over pale sand. Mineralogically it is an elbaite like any other tourmaline. We have gathered more on the varieties in our guide: Tourmaline guide: lagoon, rubellite and more at a glance.

Tourmaline is strongly pleochroic and appears distinctly darker along the length of the crystal. How the stone is oriented decides its colour — and that decision is made before the first cut. With a Mohs hardness of 7 to 7.5 and no appreciable cleavage, tourmaline is robust enough for jewellery worn every day.
