This sapphire weighs 0.74 ct and comes from Songea in Tanzania. It is worked in a pear cut and is untreated — colour and clarity are as they were laid down in the rough material. Like every stone from our workshop it is a unique piece, available only once.
The pear cut demands a clean tip: it is the most vulnerable point of the stone and at the same time the one the eye falls on first. The faceting is laid out so that the light gathers towards the tip rather than running out there.
About sapphire from Songea
Songea in the south of Tanzania has been yielding sapphires in muted green, teal and red tones since the 1990s. The material is known for responding very well to heating — which is why it is rarely found untreated in the trade. This stone is: its teal tone grew that way.
How to recognise untreated sapphires, we have described in our guide: How to recognise a genuine, untreated sapphire. With a Mohs hardness of 9, sapphire suits any piece of jewellery, including a ring worn every day.
