Sapphire 2.82 ct – Round Cut, Queensland

This sapphire weighs 2.82 ct and comes from Queensland in Australia. It is worked in a round cut and is untreated — colour and clarity are as they were laid down in the rough material. Like every stone from our workshop it is a unique piece, available only once.

The round cut draws the maximum of light out of dark material: the brilliant faceting of the pavilion throws the light back several times before it leaves the stone again. With Australian sapphire, naturally deeply saturated, that is exactly what makes the difference between almost black and vividly green.

About sapphire from Australia

Sapphire is corundum and, after diamond, the hardest gemstone material there is. The Australian fields in Queensland and New South Wales have been producing since the 19th century — deep greens, blues and yellows are characteristic there, often zoned within a single stone. This stone shows a yellow-green play typical of the material.

What matters is the treatment: by far the greatest part of the sapphires in the trade are heated to alter colour and clarity. This stone is untreated.
