This emerald weighs 0.34 ct and comes from the Habachtal in the Hohe Tauern, Austria. It is worked in a carré cut and is untreated — not oiled, not resin-filled. Colour and clarity are as they were laid down in the rough material. Like every stone from our workshop it is a unique piece, available only once.
The carré cut is a square step cut: broad, calm bands of facets around a large table. It shows the green as a closed surface and lets you see into the interior of the stone — with emerald, which almost always brings inclusions, the most honest form.
About emerald
Emerald is the variety of beryl coloured green by chromium and vanadium. The Habachtal is the best-known emerald occurrence in central Europe; cuttable material is exceptionally rare there. We have described this in detail in our guide: Emerald: untreated from the Habachtal and from Torrington.
Almost every emerald in the trade is oiled or resin-filled to disguise fissures. This stone is not — what you see stays that way. Inclusions belong to emerald and, with an Alpine stone, count as proof of origin rather than as a flaw. With a Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8 it is suitable for jewellery, but sensitive to knocks because of its internal fissures; please avoid ultrasonic cleaning.
