This emerald weighs 0.34 ct and comes from Torrington in New South Wales, Australia. It is worked in an octagon cut and is untreated — not oiled, not resin-filled. Colour and clarity are as they were laid down in the rough material. Like every stone from our workshop it is a unique piece, available only once.
The octagon cut is a step cut with clipped corners — the classic form for emerald. The clipped corners protect the brittle material, the broad steps show the light colour as a calm surface. In its almost square outline the stone looks compact and balanced.
About emerald
Emerald is the variety of beryl coloured green by chromium and vanadium. Emeralds from Torrington are typically light — a fresh, delicate green, often with a hint of blue. We have described this in detail in our guide: Emerald: untreated from the Habachtal and from Torrington.
Almost every emerald in the trade is oiled or resin-filled to disguise fissures. This stone is not — what you see stays that way. Inclusions belong to emerald and count as proof of origin rather than as a flaw. With a Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8 it is suitable for jewellery, but sensitive to knocks because of its internal fissures; please avoid ultrasonic cleaning.
