This emerald weighs 0.58 ct and comes from Torrington in New South Wales, Australia. It is worked in an emerald cut of our own and is untreated — not oiled, not resin-filled. Colour and clarity are as they were laid down in the rough material. Like every stone from our workshop it is a unique piece, available only once.

The emerald cut is named after this stone: a step cut with clipped corners that protects the brittle material and shows the colour as a calm surface. We have interpreted it freely here and adapted the proportions to the elongated rough crystal — the result is a slender stone with long, clear steps that carries the light green across its whole length.

About emerald

Emerald is the variety of beryl coloured green by chromium and vanadium. Emeralds from Torrington are typically light — a fresh, delicate green, often with a hint of blue. We have described this in detail in our guide: Emerald: untreated from the Habachtal and from Torrington.

Almost every emerald in the trade is oiled or resin-filled to disguise fissures. This stone is not — what you see stays that way. Inclusions belong to emerald and count as proof of origin rather than as a flaw. With a Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8 it is suitable for jewellery, but sensitive to knocks because of its internal fissures; please avoid ultrasonic cleaning.
