This emerald weighs 1.27 ct and comes from Torrington in New South Wales, Australia. It is worked in a marquise cut and is untreated — not oiled, not resin-filled. Colour and clarity are as they were laid down in the rough material. Like every stone from our workshop it is a unique piece, available only once.

The marquise — a long shape tapering to a point at both ends — follows the elongated rough crystal here. We worked it with step facets instead of the usual brilliant faceting: that keeps the colour calm, lets you see into the stone, and preserves as much weight as possible from this large rough piece.

About emerald

Emerald is the variety of beryl coloured green by chromium and vanadium. Emeralds from Torrington are typically light — a fresh, delicate green, often with a hint of blue. We have described this in detail in our guide: Emerald: untreated from the Habachtal and from Torrington.

An untreated emerald above one carat is a rarity — almost every stone of this size in the trade is oiled or resin-filled. This one is not — what you see stays that way. Inclusions belong to emerald and count as proof of origin rather than as a flaw. With a Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8 it is suitable for jewellery, but sensitive to knocks because of its internal fissures; please avoid ultrasonic cleaning.
