Spinel 1.29 ct – Fancy Emerald Cut, Luc Yen

This spinel weighs 1.29 ct and comes from Luc Yen in Vietnam. It is worked in a fancy emerald cut and is untreated — colour and clarity are as they were laid down in the rough material. Like every stone from our workshop it is a unique piece, available only once.

The step cut with its clipped corners shows the colour as a calm surface rather than as sparkle. With a material this clear that is the more honest choice: you look into the stone, not merely at it.

About spinel

For centuries spinel was taken for ruby — some of the most famous „rubies“ in European crown jewels are in truth spinels. Only in the 18th century were the two minerals cleanly separated. Luc Yen in northern Vietnam is today among the most important sources for pink to red spinel.

Spinel is practically never treated — unlike ruby and sapphire, that is the normal case here and not a distinguishing feature. With a Mohs hardness of 8 and no cleavage it is robust and suits any piece of jewellery, including a ring worn every day.
